Covenant Award recipient Jody Hirsh explains the genesis of the Artists’ Beit Midrash, a Jewish Artists’ Lab which originated at the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Lab addresses the need to broaden the impact of the arts in Jewish life, helping foster meaning, community, identity, and spirituality.
In honor of the holiday, we share with you a recording of the song “Amen,” sung by Tizmoret, a Jewish a cappella group directed by Covenant Award recipient Daniel Henkin.
“Small Dances About Big Ideas,” commissioned by Harvard Law School and created by choreographer Liz Lerman, uses motion, sound and characters to portray humanity’s response – or non-response – to genocide, whether it be the Holocaust or present atrocities in Darfur. A Covenant Foundation grant to the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange allows the dance company to take the piece to twelve communities across the country, reaching and challenging an audience of thousands to confront an uncomfortable and often-unaddressed issue. Film by Pearl Gluck.
Eli N. Evans, Board Chair of The Covenant Foundation, and Grover, resident muppet of Shalom Sesame, greet attendees at the 2010 Covenant Awards Dinner, in honor of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary.
